A lot of the stuff I've read on Hefner since his demise is profoundly lacking in moral, political and social insight. Some jounalists make Hefner out as a great contributor to society. I was in college in the '50s when his stuff first started showing up in Playboy. And I remember a critical article in the '60's written in national papers and journal by one of my mentors, Vernon Grounds.
But no one takes both Hefner and journalists to task like this commentary from Ross Douthat. Although there is plenty of great moral and journalistic stuff in his commentary, here's one of Douthat's best paragraphs:
Hef was the grinning pimp of the sexual revolution, with quaaludes for the ladies and Viagra for himself — a father of smut addictions and eating disorders, abortions and divorce and syphilis, a pretentious huckster who published Updike stories no one read while doing flesh procurement for celebrities, a revolutionary whose revolution chiefly benefited men much like himself.
