Our financial health is directly related to our national security. I'm not an economist and I'm not a finance guy, but I need to understand the global trends that work those engines.
--Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
It's becoming obvious that all of us who intend to succeed in our careers, whether business, law, architecture or even medicine need to build an understanding of the global trends that work the nation's economic health. This is not all knowledge for knowledge's sake. The interlocking nature of finance will impact our career security, our career future and our families. I'm guided by the old proverb that forewarned is forearmed.
If many of those on the streets had known just some of that information, they could have taken at least better care of themselves and their future. Knowing information about national finance can tell you about the business, the competition, and the potential for your future. We can no longer march into a career and expect it to work long term. Entrepreneurialism, adaptability and a certain amount of adventuresomeness are going to be required in a world in which we are all now 100% responsible for our careers and our livelihood. It is a far more Darwinian world than most of us would hope.
